Sporting Lisbon are like my 2nd team if I was going to have one.
Not because the green and white hoops although that's a sweet bonus. I went on holiday to Portugal and watched some Sporting Lisbon games on the TV and they played really nice football. That was the year they got to the UEFA Cup Final and lost to CSKA Moscow. I also had alot of respect for them because like Barcelona they constantly look to their youth players for more talent and I have huge respect for that. Also they are a huge sports club in general and are involved in the following - archery, athletics, billiards, boxing, chess, kickboxing, futsal, gymnastics, handball, shooting, superleague formula racing, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and weight lifting Last edited by CelticBhoy1990 : 2nd July 2010 at 14:43. |

CelticBhoy1990, i remenber that year we played as a team, very good! We didnt win anything this last season in football, but we did well in the others modalities, like in Handball, we won Challenge Cup, we were futsal (five a side) national champs... we did pretty good in athletism too... let's hope for football better season!! \o/ woot ![]() |

I wish Scotland tied in all the sports like they do in Portugal; Sporting, Benfica, Porto they all have futsal and handball teams.

Not just Portugal either, most of the big Greek clubs have multi-sport setups, and apparently Serbian clubs too. Plus presumably some other countries do, but those two immediately sprang to mind...

If I remember right the keeper at the time Ricardo made a couple of errors in both games. did he not punch the ball off a benfica players back for the winning goal or something? Sporting and Barcelona im sure are both the biggest multi-sports set ups around the world. I think. |

This imo is a big year coming up for Sporting Lisbon, because last season was a total disaster for them, i was in Portugal from Feburary to June and i can say it was the poorest Sporting team i had seen in years. A far cry from the very good team they had at the start of the millenium, when they had the Bento brothers, Quaresma, Simao, Schmechiel and Jardel.
The big problem Sporting has though is that 2 seasons ago Portugal lost the 3rd Champions League spot to the Russian league, this therefore counts against Sporting as Porto and Benfica are bigger clubs with bigger fanbases and more funds to spend, Benfica next season will have considerable funds at their disposal to spend even before the money they get from the sales of Di Maria, Quim and possibly David Luiz Sporting arent my favorite club in Portugal but i do admire their academy and set up, to produce stars like Ronaldo, Nani, Figo and Moutinho is impressive. MarshalScp, where do you think Sporting will finish next season?, i still think Sporting are short of a few players and losing Moutinho to Porto for next season is a dissapointment for Sporting

RiccardoPiccio, well i can't agree when you say that Porto and Benfica are clubs with more funds... i know that Benfica hold a majority of the fans in Portugal, however, it’s far from being superior to either, Sporting or Porto.
There's a difference between quantity and quality! [And more (...)!] The Sporting academy is known to be the best academy in Portugal and is also known to be one of the best in Europe, if not the best! It’s inevitable that we eventually have to sell some of our greatest players, like we did with Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma (...) As like every season, the fans are with high expectations because we renew the team. In my opinion Sporting is doing well to get rid of people like (João Moutinho). After all, we don’t want players with his mentality! Sporting's director said "i can't wish him good luck because he's in a rival club now, i just wish he doesn’t hurt himself". Some fans have voiced their opinion and are very disappointed with him and the club, although in my opinion our president and director have made the right decision, we could spoil his career by keeping him next season (cuz what he did was not right), and hurt the club as most likely he’ll sit on the bench and that would cost Sporting 1million if not more in the long term, so what benefit would that bring to the club? None! Porto gave 10 or 11 millions for him, so yes i'm glad he is out of Sporting now and i hope he never returns. Same as Simão Sabrosa, i hate cheating. They showed no respect for the club, they bite the hand that fed them! You see Cristiano Ronaldo's example in Sporting vs Manchester United match, he showed respect for the club and for the supporters... that's all we ask for! Our mentality isn't just admiration or a devotion to ‘one footballer’, we’re passionate about Sporting ‘team efforts’ however, I know 70% of fans do idol their favourite player, i’m also aware that this is a confusing time for many supporters, and in the end as always we are the most penalized due to the funding situation. Anyways, i really hope Sporting make a good season and i'm sure there’s going to be a lot of surprises in Portuguese League. I think Moutinho and Daniel Carrico (even more talented than Moutinho was at 21 and potentially a future star for Portugal) are the best out of the recent Sporting academy graduates and i agree totally that it is one of the very best in Europe, right up there with West Ham, Atalanta, Barcelona, Sevilla, Bayern Munich etc. I would like to hear your opinion on the players Sporting have bought for the 2010/11 season already and who you think Sporting should sign for the upcoming season, in what posistions do you think Sporting need to strengthen their team. I know they have signed Maniche, a young Argentinian midfielder and the Goalkeeper from Guimaraes. Do you think there are other players Sporting could buy to strengthen their team? It will be interesting next year in Portugal to see if Braga can repeat their exploits of last season and challenge Benfica again, they have the brightest young coach in Portuguese football coaching them in Dominigos Pacencia.

RiccardoPiccio, Daniel Carriço yes i am admire that he's still in Sporting, we dont know yet but i think hes going to be our next Captain! I am happy with Sporting new players for this season, but to be honest i dont know what to expect from them.
Sporting really need a player with Marco Torsi's features, and Maniche is a player with much experience, i don't know what to expect from Valdes to be honest, i know he plays good with both foot and that he can play anywhere in the attack! ... Let's see if they can work all together and play as a team! Sporting should had signed contract with Eduardo (from Sp. Braga) we do need a good GoalKeeper, or unless one that can threaten our actual one, Rui Patrício. he is a good goalkeeper but I think he feels very safe... Domingos Paciência deserved to have won the championship but there is much corruption in portuguese football... let's see how they do this season! Cheers, ![]() Marshalscp (sorry for my english) |

I will be doing a thread on General Football Discussion about the 2010/11 Portuguese League, after 4 months in Portugal it is a league which has caught my imagination and my interest. I dont like Patricio too much, he had a lot of potential 3 or 4 years in the past but since then he hasnt really progressed as a player, i think Sporting should have tried for Diego Benaglio a few years ago when he played for Nacional da Madeira. Eduardo would have been a good signing too, perhaps Daniel Fernandes too from the club in Greece where he plays.

He will score a lot for you I think. Surprised he is going to you and you must be paying him a lot of money for wages.
