It does not matter in which sport each one of us relies on to make a profit from our betting investments, the stress and anxiety that we will suffer until the… result is the same.
Whether you wait for an hour and a half for the “happy end” or three (if, for example, you have wagered a bet in tennis) the process is similar.
Through betting we are somehow looking for an inner peace, a kind of recognition, perhaps from relatives and friends who can characterise us as experts after some winning tickets. We eagerly seek to gain this recognition and boost our morale.
Before we go into the motto, let us emphasise something we often forget: The point is to have fun when betting somewhere, not to deposit money you need for groceries or your kids’ activities.
You have to bet what you can bear to lose. Otherwise you “lose the ball”. It is terribly stressful to have bet your last dollars in the bank. Many of us have experienced such situations, in a desperate attempt to reduce the losses they have deposited money that should not be used for such a purpose.
However, it is in the nature of the human species to seek success, no matter how we do it. After centuries, Aeschylus’ position that success is more than a god continues to be confirmed. Gambling is a very interesting phenomenon for modern psychologists. For this reason, several experiments have been performed related to the above topic exclusively. Here are some conclusions:
A positive attitude increases your chances of taking more risks
There is a research that has found a connection between a positive mood and the chances of someone betting. The reason is that in general when we are in a good mood (due to various factors, even due to the weather) we want to take more risks.
You will have noticed for yourself that when everything works like a Swiss watch or it is a sunny day, something pushes us to play, just for our entertainment.
A punter is easily deluded
In betting we are dealing with numbers and contingencies. Many times, however, our psychosynthesis errs because of these terms. There is a category of gamblers who, for example, when they see a team constantly winning or losing, then bet on the complete opposite in the light that this momentum will “break”, after the fact that the team finally loses / wins or the ball from red to be found this time in black is approaching.
But here we are dealing with a mistake, since in reality the chances for an event are exactly the same, especially when we talk about roulette.
We are more optimistic after betting
Probably one of the most interesting findings. Punters were asked by psychologists what odds they would give horses before and after they bet. The remarkable thing is that the players after their betting gave more chances of victory to their horse.
Subconsciously, this has happened to many of us in other sports and in soccer in particular. “Why not?” is one of the most common phrases when thinking about the result of a game.
The greater support / devotion that one shows in something, makes one more optimistic.
The Bandwagon effect
You may ignore this term, but one way or another we have all become part of this phenomenon. What does this pattern say?
When a significant mass of people show their support for an event, then the faith of those who follow this adoption becomes even greater.
This phenomenon can be strongly detected when we have a jackpot in a lottery. We will read that many people are buying tickets, even our old aunt from a small town in the middle of nowhere.
Consequently, we want to follow the current, so that we can be part of what “everybody is talking about” hoping that the time of victory has come for us.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal
Gambling is a terrible addiction, its consequences are catastrophic, it is not easily controlled and personal struggle is quite common. For this reason, this addiction is similar to other calamitous addictions, such as alcohol and drugs.
It’s difficult, but in this personal struggle, you have to manage the situation as best you can, not fall into the trap of delusion, have a systematic way of managing capital.
It is essential that we must not bet on whatever soccer league or soccer team that we know nothing about, like 2nd division of Slovakia. Success is not final, it will not last forever, nor will we become rich overnight from gambling.
Having said that, the same goes for failures. If we lose, it’s not the end of the world, but we should not immediately try to reduce the loss without having a “clean” mind. Because most of the time the risk will increase and the failures will probably double. The lost bets are in the program and this loss should be accepted.
Learn to properly attribute the responsibilities. Blaming the referee, the weather, the offensive line, the ice-cream truck and…. bad luck has negative consequences. It reminds me a bit of the situations in schools where the bad teacher was always to blame for the bad grades only because he “didn’t like us”.
Our mental and physical health is crucial when we take risks. The University of Iowa reported an indicative incident, in which a patient was exposed to risks that led to catastrophic consequences when he was in a bad psychological state due to his interpersonal relationships and the health problems he was facing.
That is why tranquility and self-control are both very important.
Each one of us will obviously manage their capital differently, as well as what and how they will bet on, but it is good to follow some rules, not to be impulsive and to know what we have bet on.
But more important than any odds given from the bookie is to have clarity, such as playing without emotion in teams and individuals.
The season is a marathon, and if we run as a sprint from the first steps we are not going to reach the finish line.
Above all, do not think about betting 24/7, take breaths, as in the rest of our lives, so in gambling, we learn from our mistakes.
